Useful network documentation helps another technician understand the environment without having to rediscover it. The documentation should answer what is installed, where it is, how it connects and which operational details matter.
Core sections
- Device inventory and management address
- WAN/ISP circuits and handoff information
- VLANs and subnets
- Switch and rack locations
- Critical circuits and uplinks
- Access points and SSIDs
- Camera/NVR inventory where applicable
- Support/vendor references
- Backup and recovery notes
Avoid embedding passwords casually
Documentation should identify where credentials are securely stored rather than encouraging plain-text passwords in a shared spreadsheet.
Keep it maintainable
A perfect diagram that nobody updates becomes less useful than a simpler workbook that technicians actually maintain after changes.
