Cat6 vs Cat6A Installation Cost: What Actually Changes?

Cat6A is not simply a more expensive box of cable. Material, termination hardware, bend radius, cable diameter, pathway fill and technician time can all change the project economics.

Material cost

Cat6A cable and compatible components generally cost more than ordinary Cat6 components. Use current supplier pricing rather than a fixed percentage assumption.

Labor can change too

Larger/stiffer cable may take longer to route, dress and terminate, particularly in dense bundles or tight pathways. If your historical Cat6 labor is 1.1 hours per drop and Cat6A work consistently takes longer, the estimate should reflect that difference.

Pathway and rack effects

Higher cable diameter affects tray/conduit fill and rack cable management. A project that looks identical on a floor plan can need more pathway and management capacity with Cat6A.

When Cat6A can make sense

The decision should be driven by application, link requirements, environment, customer standards and future needs—not by assuming the more expensive cable is automatically better for every installation.

Estimating tip

Create separate Cat6 and Cat6A run types with their own cable price, labor hours and termination cost. Do not use one generic per-drop figure.
