Camera Bandwidth Calculator
Estimate total camera bandwidth, recorder uplink load, and approximate daily data volume from camera count, bitrate, and recording schedule.
Planning estimate only. Actual bitrate varies with codec, frame rate, scene complexity, motion, lighting, firmware, and VBR/CBR settings.
Use the free NVR Storage Calculator to estimate retention from camera count, bitrate, recording schedule, and retention days.
Open NVR Storage Calculator →How this camera bandwidth calculator works
The calculator multiplies camera count by average bitrate, adds a planning allowance, compares the result against the recorder uplink and WAN upload, and estimates daily data volume from recording hours.
Worked example
Sixteen cameras at 4 Mbps each produce about 64 Mbps of aggregate stream traffic. With a 20% planning allowance, design traffic becomes about 76.8 Mbps.
Why bitrate matters more than resolution
Resolution, codec, frame rate, scene complexity, motion, and image-quality settings all affect bitrate. Use configured or observed bitrate whenever possible.

Calculate NVR data rate from camera bitrate
Total NVR recording bandwidth is approximately the sum of the active camera stream bitrates. Add headroom for bitrate variation, remote viewing, substreams, additional clients, and future camera growth.
Camera bitrateThe key input for recording traffic.Camera countMultiply the active stream load across all cameras.Remote viewingCan add outbound bandwidth beyond recorder ingest traffic.Network headroomAvoid designing recorder uplinks at 100% utilization.
